Hammersmith is in West London in the Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. There are plenty of local attractions and amenities to recommend this area, as well as some interesting neighbouring areas such as Kensington, Earl's Court, Fulham and Shepherd's Bush.
Along with Fulham, Hammersmith forms part of the north bank of the River Thames. It is an important commercial centre in London and has good transport connections. There are famous theatres and other cultural hot spots here, and the area has an interesting international influence, making this a great place to be entertained and to find bars and restaurants serving top notch food.
King’s Street is the area's main shopping street where you will find the Kings Mall, plenty of small shops, the Town Hall, the well known and popular Lyric theatre, cinemas and hotels. Shepherds Bush Road a little further north, and Fulham Palace Road a little further south also provide good services and shopping facilities.
The Riverside Studios were once an old water pump factory which is now a cinema, performance space, bar and café. It is a pleasant building and the inside boasts a bar, a restaurant and comfy sofas for reclining and musing about the arts. They often screen classic films here and there is an outdoor terrace with lovely views of the Thames to enjoy in the summer. The Hammersmith Apollo concert hall and theatre and the Hammersmith Palais nightclub are here, but the latter is now disused.
The Dove is a well known old pub with quite a history. It is said to have the smallest bar in the world, and was frequented by Ernest Hemingway and Graham Greene in their heyday. The narrow alleyway that is home to this historic site is the only bit left of the old riverside village this once was. On Thursdays the Hammersmith farmers market unfolds! You will find find a wide selection of fresh produce from local farms and quite a range of diverse cuisines on sale. The much loved and famous Riverside Café lies here, famed for its innovative style and fresh, seasonal produce. Jamie Oliver trained there.
Much leisure and fun is to be had alongside Hammersmith’s pedestrianised riverside, where you will find pubs, a rowing club and Furnival Gardens. Another large municipal park, Ravenscourt Park lies to the West. It has excellent facilities, including tennis courts, basketball courts, a bowling lawn, a paddling pool for the younger one’s and playgrounds. The William Morris Museum is to be found here alongside the river.
Nearby Shepherd's Bush has a good local market and the enormous Westfield Shopping Centre. The museums and parks of Kensington are not far away, and neither is the Olympia Exhibition Centre.
You are well connected, transport-wise. There are two underground stations named Hammersmith that lie across the road from each other. One is served by the Hammersmith & City, and Circle lines and the other by the Piccadilly and District lines. The latter forms part of what is known as The Broadway Centre by Hammersmith Broadway. The large shopping centre here has a large modern bus station next to it which is open 24 hours a day. There are a good range of buses, night buses, airport transfer buses and some long distance coaches at your disposal.
Charles Dickens made Hammersmith the home of the Pocket family in Great Expectations and they lived close to the river. The Thames casts its magical spell in this area, just as it did way back then...
